Maldives’ Velana International Airport (VIA) reached a significant aviation milestone on Tuesday, as Air Arabia became the first international carrier to operate from the newly constructed Terminal 1. The ceremonial ribbon-cutting marked the beginning of a phased operational transition for the expansive 72,000 square metre facility, signaling a major upgrade to the country’s primary international gateway.
Originally unveiled on Maldives’ Independence Day (26 July), the terminal initially served Maldivian international passengers. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the airport’s operator, confirmed that the complete transition to the new terminal will be implemented over three months, following international best practices for complex infrastructure deployments.
The state-of-the-art terminal boasts impressive infrastructure designed to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency. Key features include:
• 12 passenger boarding bridges
• 47 traditional check-in counters
• 24 dedicated seaplane check-in counters
• Advanced real-time baggage tracking system
• Enhanced immigration facilities with electronic gates
• Comprehensive passenger flow infrastructure including 41 elevators, 14 escalators, and 4 travellators
With a projected annual passenger capacity of seven million, the terminal represents a significant expansion of the Maldives’ aviation infrastructure. The design thoughtfully incorporates local aesthetic elements, featuring wall patterns inspired by the country’s natural environment while maintaining modern functional standards.
Beyond its immediate operational benefits, the new terminal is strategically positioned to attract additional airline partnerships and increase flight frequencies. MACL officials emphasized that the upgrade will play a crucial role in strengthening the Maldives’ status as a regional aviation hub, with direct positive implications for the nation’s tourism sector.
The terminal’s sophisticated design and advanced technological capabilities signal a forward-looking approach to international travel infrastructure. By blending cutting-edge functionality with local design sensibilities, Velana International Airport has created a welcoming gateway that reflects the Maldives’ commitment to world-class transportation services.
As the phased implementation continues, travelers can anticipate a smoother, more efficient airport experience that meets contemporary global standards while celebrating the unique character of the Maldivian destination.
