Velana International Airport (VIA) has officially opened its state-of-the-art international passenger terminal, marking a significant milestone in the Maldives’ aviation infrastructure development. Air Arabia became the first international carrier to operate from the new Terminal 1, celebrating the airport’s expanded capabilities during a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event.
The 72,000 square metre facility, initially unveiled on Maldives’ Independence Day (26 July), represents a strategic expansion of the country’s primary international gateway. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has outlined a carefully planned three-month transition process to ensure smooth implementation of the new terminal’s operations.
The terminal boasts an impressive array of modern amenities designed to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency. Key features include:
• 12 passenger boarding bridges
• 47 traditional check-in counters
• 24 dedicated seaplane check-in counters
• Advanced baggage handling system with real-time tracking capabilities
• Enhanced immigration facilities, including electronic gates
• Comprehensive passenger flow infrastructure with 41 elevators, 14 escalators, and 4 travellators
Designed with a unique architectural approach, the terminal incorporates wall patterns inspired by the Maldives’ natural environment, seamlessly blending modern functionality with local aesthetic elements. The facility is engineered to support an annual passenger capacity of seven million, positioning the Maldives as a competitive regional aviation hub.
MACL officials emphasized that the new terminal is more than just an infrastructure project. It represents a strategic investment in the country’s tourism and transportation sectors, with the potential to attract additional airline partnerships and increase flight frequencies.
The terminal’s advanced design and technological capabilities signal a significant upgrade to the Maldives’ international travel infrastructure. By providing world-class facilities, the airport aims to enhance the country’s global connectivity and create a more welcoming entry point for international travelers.
As the first phase of operations begins, aviation and tourism stakeholders are optimistic about the terminal’s potential to drive economic growth and improve the overall travel experience for visitors to the Maldives.
