Velana International Airport (VIA) has officially opened its state-of-the-art international passenger terminal, marking a significant milestone in the Maldives’ aviation infrastructure development. Air Arabia became the first international carrier to operate from the new Terminal 1, celebrating the airport’s expanded capabilities during a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event.
The 72,000 square metre facility, initially unveiled on Maldives’ Independence Day (26 July), represents a strategic expansion of the country’s primary international gateway. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the airport’s operator, has outlined a carefully planned three-month transition process to ensure smooth implementation in line with international aviation standards.
The terminal boasts an impressive array of modern features designed to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency. Key infrastructure highlights include:
• 12 passenger boarding bridges
• 47 traditional check-in counters
• 24 dedicated seaplane check-in counters
• Advanced baggage handling system with real-time tracking capabilities
• Enhanced immigration facilities, including electronic gates
• Comprehensive passenger flow infrastructure with 41 elevators, 14 escalators, and 4 travellators
Architecturally, the terminal showcases a unique design philosophy that harmonizes modern functionality with the Maldives’ natural aesthetic. Wall patterns and design elements draw inspiration from the archipelago’s distinctive environmental landscape, creating a visually striking and culturally resonant space.
The facility is engineered to support an annual passenger capacity of seven million, positioning the Maldives as a potentially significant regional aviation hub. MACL officials anticipate that the upgraded terminal will attract additional airline partnerships and potentially increase flight frequencies, providing a substantial boost to the nation’s tourism sector.
Beyond its immediate operational benefits, the new terminal represents a strategic investment in the Maldives’ transportation infrastructure. By offering world-class facilities and improved passenger experiences, the airport aims to strengthen the country’s competitive position in international travel and tourism markets.
As the first phase of operations begins, travelers can expect a seamless and modern airport experience that reflects the Maldives’ commitment to developing high-quality international transportation infrastructure.
