In a move to enhance connectivity and accessibility across the Maldives, Maldivian, the national airline, has introduced a new seaplane service linking the capital Malé to the remote islands of Fulhadhoo, Fehendhoo, and Goidhoo in Baa Atoll. The new route, which launches on March 31, 2025, will operate twice weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays, providing a faster and more scenic option for travelers and residents alike.
The introduction of this seaplane service significantly cuts down travel time, reducing the journey from Malé to just 25 minutes. This is a vast improvement over the current routes, which require longer transit through the island of Dharavandhoo, often presenting logistical challenges due to the geographical distance. The new direct connection will make it easier for visitors to access these remote corners of Baa Atoll, whether they are visiting friends and family or seeking a tranquil island escape.
Strengthening Maldivian’s Domestic Footprint
This expansion is a strategic move by Maldivian to strengthen its domestic footprint. The airline now operates flights to 16 domestic airports and has an extensive fleet of 25 aircraft, including 11 DHC-6 Twin Otters dedicated to seaplane operations. By enhancing connectivity to the remote islands of Baa Atoll, Maldivian is positioning itself to accommodate the rising demand for both domestic and international travel, particularly from key markets such as India and China.
“The introduction of this new seaplane service is a testament to our commitment to provide seamless and efficient travel options for our customers,” said Ahmed Solih, CEO of Maldivian. “By cutting down travel time and offering a more scenic route, we are making it easier for both visitors and residents to explore the natural wonders of Baa Atoll.”
Ticket bookings for the new route are now open, and Maldivian is encouraging early reservations to ensure availability for the upcoming launch. Travelers can visit the airline’s website at www.maldivian.aero or contact the dedicated seaplane hotline at 1671 for bookings and inquiries.
