Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has taken a significant step in its growth strategy by launching wide-body operations to international destinations with its newly acquired Airbus A330-200. This expansion is expected to generate numerous job opportunities for local Maldivians, according to Ali Saleem, the Deputy Managing Director of Island Aviation Services Ltd (IAS).
Wide-Body Flights to China and Beyond
Maldivian recently launched its first wide-body flight to Chengdu, China, followed by the addition of Beijing to its network. This move is part of the airline’s broader efforts to position the Maldives more prominently in the global aviation industry.
Speaking to state media, Saleem highlighted the immediate employment benefits of the new wide-body operations. “We will need more pilots, cabin crew, cargo engineers, and agents. Even with just one aircraft, about 70 jobs have been created. Our aim is to make Maldivian an airline operated entirely by Maldivians,” he said, noting that 95% of the company’s current staff are local.
Expanding Capacity and Reach
The expansion aligns with the government’s commitment to increase Maldivian’s capacity and reach. As part of this effort, an additional wide-body aircraft is set to be acquired, enabling flights to European destinations by October this year. This initiative also fulfills an electoral pledge by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to bolster the national airline.
A Growing Demand for Local Talent
Maldivian’s Director of Flight Operations, Captain Ahmed Hunain, emphasized that the introduction of more wide-body aircraft will provide significant opportunities for local pilots. However, he acknowledged that the company currently faces limitations in accommodating the high number of applicants.
“There are over 100 pilots seeking employment at Maldivian. When we opened applications, about 100 pilots applied, but at this time, we can only fill three vacancies,” Captain Hunain explained. The airline’s growing operations are expected to gradually create additional positions for aspiring local pilots and other aviation professionals.
Collaboration Across Sectors
The success of Maldivian’s expanded international operations depends on the cooperation of various sectors, including Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), embassies, travel agents, and private businesses. Saleem underscored the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure the smooth implementation of new routes and services.
As Maldivian continues its international expansion, the airline not only enhances its reputation globally but also strengthens its role as a key contributor to the Maldives’ economy by creating more employment opportunities and fostering the growth of local talent.
