The Maldivian government is set to dramatically transform its maritime infrastructure through a comprehensive nationwide port development strategy, with the Kulhudhuffushi City Commercial Port serving as the flagship project of an ambitious economic decentralization initiative. Economic Development and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed revealed a sweeping plan to reshape the country’s logistics landscape, signaling a major leap forward in national economic development.
During a pivotal signing ceremony in the capital, Minister Saeed highlighted the strategic importance of expanding port infrastructure across the archipelago. The Kulhudhuffushi port project represents the first phase of a multi-pronged approach designed to enhance economic resilience and improve supply chain efficiency for northern atoll regions.
The port development plan targets critical improvements in maritime logistics, with specific focus on four key northern atolls: Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, and Noonu. Planned enhancements include expanded harbour capacity, advanced cargo handling systems, and state-of-the-art secure storage facilities capable of managing both general goods and temperature-sensitive perishables.
Beyond the immediate Kulhudhuffushi project, the government’s vision encompasses a comprehensive network of commercial ports strategically positioned across the Maldives. Confirmed expansion plans include:
• A new commercial port in Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll
• Further development of existing ports in Laamu and Seenu Atolls
• Potential redevelopment of the Maamigili port in Alif Dhaalu Atoll
Minister Saeed emphasized that these initiatives represent more than isolated infrastructure projects. “Our strategy is about creating a robust, interconnected logistics network that will decentralize economic activity and establish a more resilient national supply chain,” he stated during the agreement signing with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
The economic implications are significant. By establishing a scheduled freight network connecting ports from north to south, the government anticipates substantial benefits, including reduced import costs, improved food security, and enhanced local commercial opportunities. MPL CEO Mohamed Rishwan described the project as a “transformative milestone” in the Maldives’ maritime trade evolution.
Key projected outcomes of the port infrastructure strategy include:
• Lowering overall logistical operational expenses
• Improving goods delivery efficiency
• Creating new economic opportunities in regional communities
• Enhancing national food security mechanisms
The Kulhudhuffushi port project marks the first tangible step in this ambitious national infrastructure transformation. As part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s broader economic development agenda, the initiative demonstrates a strategic commitment to modernizing the Maldives’ maritime infrastructure and creating a more integrated, efficient national logistics ecosystem.
Stakeholders from both the public and private sectors are closely watching this unprecedented infrastructure investment, which promises to redefine the Maldives’ economic landscape and global connectivity potential.
