In a strategic move to enhance climate change transparency and analytical capabilities, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment has successfully completed a comprehensive one-day training program in data visualization using Microsoft Power BI, signaling a significant step forward in the nation’s climate reporting infrastructure.
The specialized training, executed under the CBIT Maldives Project—Capacity Strengthening for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions—was supported by prominent international organizations including the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
A diverse cohort of 32 participants from both public and private sectors participated in the intensive workshop, representing key national institutions such as the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Utility Regulatory Authority, Maldives Airports Company, and major utility providers including FENAKA, STELCO, and Dhiraagu.
Delivered through a collaborative effort by Grant Thornton Bharat LLP and Riyan Private Limited, the training focused on practical Power BI applications specifically tailored to climate and energy data management. Participants gained critical skills in data interface navigation, source connection, dashboard construction, and advanced visualization techniques aligned with national climate reporting standards.
During the closing ceremony, Minister of State for Tourism and Environment H.E. Ibrahim Mimrah personally awarded certificates to participants, highlighting the strategic importance of data-driven climate action. “These skills represent more than technical training,” Mimrah emphasized. “They are fundamental tools for transforming how we understand, track, and respond to climate challenges.”
The program’s curriculum emphasized hands-on learning, enabling participants to develop sophisticated data visualization skills that can translate complex climate data into actionable insights. By equipping government and private sector professionals with advanced analytical capabilities, the training initiative aims to foster more transparent, efficient, and responsive climate change strategies.
Key learning outcomes included mastering Power BI’s interface, developing skills in data cleaning and transformation, creating interactive dashboards, and implementing visualization techniques that make climate data more accessible and comprehensible to decision-makers and the public.
This training represents a critical investment in the Maldives’ climate resilience strategy, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to leveraging technology and data analytics in addressing environmental challenges. By empowering professionals across multiple sectors with advanced data visualization skills, the initiative sets a new standard for climate data transparency and strategic planning.
