Maldives Streamlines Export Process with Online Certificate of Origin for China Trade

The Maldives Customs Service has introduced a digital solution for exporters, enabling online applications for Certificates of Origin required for goods exported to China under the Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Effective 15 August, exporters can now submit necessary documents and payments through the Customs portal, with approval notifications to be issued electronically. This digital transformation aims to simplify and expedite the export documentation process for Maldivian businesses.

The Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement, originally signed in 2014 and ratified by Parliament in 2017, experienced implementation delays following administrative changes in 2018. The agreement finally came into full effect on 1 January of this year under the current administration.

A key benefit of the FTA is the zero-rate tariff on Maldivian fishery products exported to China. The agreement covers 296 seafood categories, including high-value marine products such as:

• Sea cucumber
• Salted fish
• Grouper
• Mariculture products
• Skipjack tuna
• Yellowfin tuna

This comprehensive trade arrangement is expected to significantly boost the Maldives’ seafood export potential, which represents the country’s largest export commodity. By eliminating tariff barriers, the FTA creates new opportunities for Maldivian marine producers to access the Chinese market more competitively.

The online application system represents a crucial step in modernizing trade processes, reducing bureaucratic complexity, and supporting the nation’s export-oriented economic strategies. Exporters can now complete their documentation efficiently, with faster processing times and increased transparency.

Businesses looking to utilize the new online Certificate of Origin application system can access the Customs portal directly, where they will find comprehensive guidance on submission requirements and procedures.
