Maldives Launches Landmark Solar Initiative to Empower Households and Drive Renewable Energy

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy is poised to launch the Magey Solar Programme, a groundbreaking initiative designed to bring solar energy to Maldivian households, reducing electricity costs and promoting sustainable energy practices nationwide. Online applications will be accepted through the Fenaka Corporation’s website from Monday, with eligibility determined on a first-come, first-served basis.

Building on the success of previous initiatives, which saw 748 households equipped with solar power systems, the Magey Solar Programme has been carefully planned to ensure a seamless implementation process. System allocations have been published in the Gazette, providing specific details for each atoll. Eligible applicants will have the option to install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with capacities of 3 kW and 5 kW, based on net metering survey data.

A key feature of the programme is that no advance payment is required for installation. However, applicants will be required to pay a fee upon signing their contract. The 3 kW system is priced at USD 2,929, while the 5 kW system costs USD 4,883.

The Ministry’s initiative is a crucial step towards achieving the government’s ambitious goal of sourcing 33% of the nation’s energy from renewable resources. The Magey Solar Programme is expected to play a pivotal role in driving the adoption of cleaner energy sources, while providing financial benefits to households across the archipelago.

“The Magey Solar Programme is a significant milestone in our efforts to transition to a more sustainable energy mix and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels,” said [Minister’s Name], Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy. “We are committed to empowering Maldivian households and promoting a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.”
