The Maldives is set to host its inaugural international table tennis tournament, the 1st Thoddoo Masters Table Tennis Tournament (TMTT), from August 19–25, 2025, in Thoddoo, marking a significant milestone in the country’s sports tourism strategy.
Organized by Thoddoo Local Authority Company (TLAC) and Ihaa Table Tennis Academy (ITTA), the tournament has received prestigious endorsements from the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, the Table Tennis Association of Maldives, and Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC).
The event will bring together 120 international and local players aged 35 and above, transforming the tournament into a multifaceted platform that extends far beyond competitive sports. By hosting this international event, the Maldives aims to showcase its potential as a dynamic sports tourism destination that offers more than just pristine beaches and luxury resorts.
Scheduled to take place at Thoddoo’s multi-purpose school hall, the tournament represents a strategic initiative to diversify tourism offerings and create meaningful economic and cultural opportunities for local communities. The event is expected to generate significant local engagement, promote cultural exchange, and provide tangible economic benefits to the island.
Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO & Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation, emphasized the broader vision behind the tournament: “This tournament highlights our commitment to expanding the Maldives’ tourism horizon. Sports tourism is a rapidly growing sector, and by supporting international tournaments such as TMTT, we reinforce the Maldives’ global image as more than a leisure destination — but also a vibrant hub for sports, wellness, and lifestyle experiences.”
The strategic approach goes beyond immediate sporting competition. By positioning the Maldives as a versatile destination capable of hosting world-class sporting events, the country aims to attract a new segment of international travelers interested in combining athletic pursuits with extraordinary travel experiences.
The 1st Thoddoo Masters Table Tennis Tournament represents a pivotal moment in the Maldives’ tourism development strategy. It demonstrates the nation’s ability to innovate, create unique visitor experiences, and leverage sports as a powerful tool for international engagement and economic diversification.
As the tournament approaches, it promises to be more than just a sporting event—it is a testament to the Maldives’ evolving identity as a destination that offers rich, multifaceted experiences for global travelers.
