Maldives and India Deepen Strategic Partnership with High-Level Core Group Meeting

Landmark Discussions Pave the Way for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Collaboration

Male, Maldives – In a significant step towards strengthening their strategic partnership, the Maldives and India convened the first meeting of the High-Level Core Group (HLCG) in the Maldivian capital of Maldives. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marked a new chapter in the cooperation between the two nations as they work to implement the shared “A Vision for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership”.

The discussions, guided by the vision document set forth by Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi following their meeting in October last year, covered a broad spectrum of collaborative areas. Key topics on the agenda included development cooperation, trade and commerce, digital financing, health cooperation, strengthening people-to-people connections, as well as defense and maritime security.

Deepening Ties for Sustainable Growth and Security

Both countries reviewed their current collaborations with the aim of deepening their ties, focusing on sustainable development projects, enhancing trade relations, and ensuring maritime security in the region. The meeting underscored the commitment of both nations to not only maintain but also amplify their cooperative efforts in these strategic areas.

“This initiative is a testament to the enduring friendship and shared objectives between the Maldives and India,” said a senior Maldivian government official. “We are working towards a robust framework that supports mutual growth and security in the Indian Ocean region.”

Constructive Dialogue and Continued Momentum

The dialogue was described as constructive, with both sides expressing satisfaction with the progress made so far and setting the stage for further engagements. The next meeting of the HLCG is scheduled to take place in India in April 2025, promising continued momentum in the partnership.

“This is a crucial step forward in our comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership with the Maldives,” said an Indian government spokesperson. “We are committed to working closely with our Maldivian counterparts to unlock the full potential of our cooperation for the benefit of both nations and the wider region.”
