August 4, 2024 – Gili Lankanfushi, the pioneering Maldivian luxury resort, announced the promotion of Rodrigo Buanafina to the position of General Manager, effective August 4th. Buanafina, formerly the resort’s manager, brings 15 years of experience in luxury hospitality to his new role, overseeing the daily operations of the 45-villa island and its nearly 300-person team.

A Brazilian native, Buanafina joined Gili Lankanfushi in 2018 as Food and Beverage Manager, quickly rising to Director of F&B. Over five years, he led a team of nearly 100, introducing innovative gourmet offerings and experiences. These included a unique blind-dining experience, a Brazilian Churrascaria theme night, and a “Destination Drinking” bartender battle, significantly enhancing the resort’s already renowned culinary reputation.
His contributions to the resort’s F&B program led to his promotion to Resort Manager in 2023. In this expanded role, he oversaw daily operations and spearheaded significant renovation projects. These included the construction of a new Marine Biology Centre and an Overwater Restaurant, along with extensive resort-wide refurbishments. His leadership ensured the seamless integration of these improvements while maintaining the resort’s exceptional service standards.
Buanafina’s career in hospitality spans diverse locations and roles. Before joining Gili Lankanfushi, he held various F&B management positions at prestigious hotels, including The Nittany Lion Inn at Pennsylvania State University and Pine Cliffs, a Luxury Collection Resort in the Algarve region of Portugal. This varied experience has provided him with a broad understanding of the hospitality industry and a diverse skillset perfectly suited to his new role at Gili Lankanfushi.
