Velana International Airport Launches New International Terminal with Air Arabia Inaugural Flight

Velana International Airport (VIA) has officially opened its state-of-the-art international passenger terminal, marking a significant milestone in the Maldives’ aviation infrastructure development. On Tuesday, Air Arabia became the first international carrier to operate from the new Terminal 1, following a ceremonial ribbon-cutting that symbolizes the airport’s expanded capabilities.

Initially unveiled on Maldives’ Independence Day (26 July), the terminal was first dedicated exclusively to Maldivian’s international passengers. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the airport’s operator, has outlined a carefully planned three-month transition process aligned with international best practices.

The expansive 72,000 square metre facility represents a major upgrade to the country’s aviation infrastructure. MACL has partnered with Modalis Infrastructure Partners Inc. to ensure a smooth transition and maintain global safety and service standards. The phased implementation strategy includes an initial two-week period of exclusive use by Maldivian, followed by a second phase that will introduce operations for seven identified airlines.

The terminal boasts impressive technical specifications designed to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency. Key features include:

• 12 passenger boarding bridges
• 47 traditional check-in counters
• 24 dedicated seaplane check-in counters
• Advanced baggage handling system with real-time tracking
• Enhanced immigration facilities, including e-gates
• Comprehensive passenger flow infrastructure with 41 elevators, 14 escalators, and 4 travellators

With a projected annual passenger capacity of seven million, the new terminal represents a significant expansion of the Maldives’ aviation capabilities. The design thoughtfully incorporates local aesthetic elements, featuring wall patterns inspired by the country’s natural environment while maintaining modern functionality.

Beyond its immediate operational benefits, the terminal is strategically positioned to attract new airline partnerships and increase flight frequencies. Officials anticipate the facility will play a crucial role in strengthening the Maldives’ position as a regional aviation hub, providing direct support to the country’s vital tourism industry.

The full operational transition is expected to be completed before the upcoming tourist season, promising improved travel experiences for international visitors to the Maldives. As the first phase of implementation begins, the new terminal stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to world-class infrastructure and tourism development.
