President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has completed a strategic tour of Baa Atoll’s inhabited islands, announcing a series of significant infrastructure, public services, and economic development initiatives designed to transform local communities.
In Hithaadhoo, the President made a landmark announcement regarding Maamaduvvaree island, which will be transferred to the local community after resolving outstanding legal requirements. This move is expected to unlock new economic opportunities for residents. Key developments include signing agreements for a critical land reclamation project and the construction of a multipurpose school hall. Additionally, a new Bank of Maldives ATM service was inaugurated, enhancing financial accessibility for island residents.
Kihaadhoo witnessed substantial progress with the signing of a school extension project that will include a modern science laboratory. A comprehensive shore protection project was also completed, demonstrating the government’s commitment to environmental resilience. The 2026 budget proposals include critical infrastructure improvements such as erosion control in the northern area, relocation of the powerhouse, and construction of new Fenaka offices.
The President announced significant healthcare improvements for Kihaadhoo, including the provision of an ambulance this year and plans for a health centre extension in the upcoming year. Another Bank of Maldives ATM service was established, further improving financial services in the region.
In Dhonfan, the government took decisive action to accelerate delayed water and sewerage projects. Malé Water and Sewerage Company has been directed to recruit additional personnel to expedite these critical infrastructure developments. Substantial agreements were signed for a 13-hectare land reclamation project, which will expand harbour capacity and create a designated swimming area.
The Dhonfan development plan also includes a comprehensive school project featuring new classrooms, a multipurpose hall, a library, and a science laboratory, reflecting the government’s commitment to educational infrastructure.
Dharavandhoo received special attention, with the President pledging to upgrade Dharavandhoo Airport through Island Aviation Services, recognizing its strategic importance as a regional transport hub. The comprehensive development plan for the island includes road and harbour development, tourism initiatives, and healthcare sector upgrades.
The island’s educational infrastructure will also see significant improvements, with plans for an eight-classroom school expansion, new office premises, and a multipurpose hall for Baa Atoll School.
Across the visited islands, the tour highlighted a consistent and strategic approach to development. The initiatives span multiple critical sectors, including land reclamation, educational infrastructure, sports and recreation facilities, healthcare services, and financial and transport infrastructure. Many of these transformative projects are set to commence this year, signaling a new era of progress for Baa Atoll’s communities.
