Niyama Private Islands Maldives Receives Platinum Green Growth 2050 Certification for Unparalleled Commitment to Sustainability

Niyama Private Islands Maldives is proud to announce its achievement of Platinum Green Growth 2050 certification, a testament to its unwavering dedication to sustainable operations and environmental stewardship. This prestigious recognition highlights the resort’s commitment to minimizing its carbon footprint and adopting eco-friendly practices that benefit the local community and the environment.

The Maldives, comprising over 1,200 low-lying islands, is one of the world’s most vulnerable nations to climate change. In response, Niyama Private Islands Maldives has inherent a holistic approach to sustainability, serving as a benchmark for environmentally responsible tourism. The Green Growth 2050 certification, set by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), evaluates a hotel’s sustainability performance across 400 indicators aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and UNEP’s Green Economy Principles.

Niyama Private Islands Maldives scored an impressive 90% to achieve Platinum certification, joining fellow Minor Hotels properties Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas and Anantara Veli Maldives Resort as the first in the Maldives to achieve this distinction.

“Sustainability is not just a goal – it is a core part of our identity,” states Hafidh Al Busaidy, General Manager of the resort. “We are honored to receive Green Growth 2050 Platinum certification, reflecting the hard work of our team and our commitment to creating a positive impact on the environment and the local community. This award motivates us to continue pushing boundaries in sustainable luxury, inspiring others to do the same.”

Sustainable Operations and Environmental Stewardship

Niyama Private Islands Maldives leverages the latest clean technology to conserve natural resources. Inverter-type air conditioners and LED lighting maximize efficiency, while motion sensors reduce energy waste. A reverse-osmosis plant on site turns seawater into drinking water, greywater is filtered and recycled, and a towel and linen reuse program minimizes laundry consumption.

Conserving the Environment and Promoting Sustainable Tourism

The resort’s pristine environment is a key aspect of the guest experience. Niyama’s chef’s garden cultivates organic produce for guests, while nurseries conserve native plant species. Minimal interaction with marine life is maintained, and regular beach and reef clean-ups take place to protect the islands against erosion.

Engaging with the Local Community and Promoting Sustainability

Niyama operates as a part of the local community, sourcing snacks, coconuts, and seafood from neighboring islands. Maldivian cooking classes, local island tours, and boduberu drumming and sand art initiatives are offered to guests, while local artisans are employed. The resort’s kids’ club teaches Maldivian culture and a sustainable way of life, ensuring a lasting impact on the next generation.

Supporting Local Causes through the Dollar Impact Program

Niyama’s Dollar Impact program matches guest donations dollar for dollar, supporting worthy causes such as local schools and hospitals, the Holistic Approach to Reef Protection, and the Olive Ridley project that monitors the health of the Maldives’ beautiful sea turtles.
