Explore the Cinematic World of Kowloon Walled City at Hong Kong’s Immersive New Exhibition

Kowloon Walled City: A Cinematic Journey, a groundbreaking new open-air exhibition in Hong Kong, is bringing the former site of the Kowloon Walled City back to life through full-scale set recreations. Once the world’s most densely populated place, the Walled City was known for its maze-like architecture and unique way of life before its demolition in the 1990s.

The exhibition offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in this remarkable chapter of Hong Kong’s history. Launched on May 23rd, it is the largest of its kind in the city, recreating scenes from the 2024 action film Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Visitors can explore realistic sets of 1980s alleyways and shops, including a tailor, barber, bone-setting clinic, and fish ball factory. The exhibition is open daily at Kowloon Walled City Park’s Yamen area and will run for three years, with free admission.

Beyond the exhibition, the Kowloon City district offers visitors a glimpse into Hong Kong’s rich cultural heritage. The area is home to landmarks like the Hau Wong Temple, built in 1730, and the Cattle Depot Artist Village, a former slaughterhouse-turned-art hub. Nearby Sung Wong Toi MTR station displays archaeological finds from the Song and Yuan Dynasties.

Kowloon City is also renowned for its vibrant food scene. Long-standing cafés like Lok Yuen serve up unique dishes like satay beef French toast, while Fong Wing Kee and Lok Hau Fook continue to attract diners with their traditional Chiu Chow cuisine. Tai Wo Tang, a former Chinese medicine shop, now operates as a modern café that retains its original charm.

For a more contemporary shopping experience, visitors can explore AIRSIDE at Kai Tak, which offers international brands, lifestyle boutiques, and indoor surfing. Nearby, Kai Tak Mall hosts over 200 stores and indoor attractions such as EpicLand and a climbing wall.
