Radisson Hotel Group (RHG) is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative to reduce single-use plastic waste and promote a circular economy in the hospitality industry. The group has expanded its closed-loop recycling system for bulk liquid amenities across key markets, including India, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
At the heart of this strategy is RHG’s commitment to minimizing its environmental footprint. The closed-loop system involves a meticulous process of collecting used bulk amenity bottles, extracting and recycling the remaining liquids, and then repurposing the packaging. In India, this is facilitated by a network of 11 dedicated recycling partners who manage the collection and processing of the amenity waste from RHG hotels. The materials are meticulously sorted, cleaned, and recycled into raw inputs, with the entire process documented and audited to ensure complete traceability.
RHG is also taking concrete steps to phase out single-use plastic from its hotels through the introduction of bulk amenity dispensers in bathrooms. As part of its participation in the Hotel Sustainability Basics program, the group aims to have these dispensers installed across its entire portfolio by the end of 2025. This move is expected to eliminate a staggering 57 million miniature amenity bottles annually, reducing plastic use by approximately 500 tonnes.
Furthermore, RHG has taken the initiative to replace single-use plastic from its dry bathroom amenities. These products now utilize innovative materials with reduced plastic content, such as stone paper made from calcium carbonate and high-density polyethylene resin, as well as FSC-certified cardboard from recycled and responsibly managed forests. The dry amenities also incorporate PSM (plastarch material), a plant-based plastic alternative made from corn and potato starches.
These bold sustainability efforts by Radisson Hotel Group are aligned with the growing global demand for more eco-friendly travel options. According to a recent survey, 75% of travelers worldwide seek out sustainable travel choices, and 43% believe that service providers play a key role in reducing the environmental impact of travel.
RHG is actively responding to these expectations through its participation in initiatives like the Hotel Sustainability Basics program and the implementation of third-party eco-labeling. By leading the way in innovative recycling and plastic-reduction strategies, the group is firmly positioning itself as a trailblazer in the realm of sustainable hospitality.
