Transformative Investment to Modernize Fishing Industry and Enhance Livelihoods in Ihavandhoo
Ihavandhoo, Maldives – In a move to bolster the Maldivian fishing industry, the government has unveiled plans to develop a state-of-the-art Fisheries Complex in Ihavandhoo, a strategic location. This transformative $30 million (MVR 474 million) investment is set to generate 150 much-needed jobs and significantly enhance the efficiency of fish processing and storage operations in the region.
Speaking to the island’s residents, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu highlighted the project’s far-reaching impact, stating, “The Fisheries Complex will be a game-changer for our fishing industry, a key contributor to our national economy. This investment underscores our unwavering commitment to addressing the economic needs of communities reliant on this vital sector.”
A Hub of Modernization and Efficiency
The Fisheries Complex, slated to begin construction in May, will be completed within 18 months. It will boast a 1,000-tonne cold storage facility and a 50-tonne brine freezing capacity, ensuring greater efficiency in fish processing and storage. Additionally, the complex will feature a jetty and harbor with three fish landing points, streamlining the unloading process and improving overall logistical operations for the fishing industry.
“This project is a testament to our government’s dedication to strengthening the fisheries sector and empowering local communities,” said President Muizzu. “By modernizing our infrastructure and enhancing the industry’s capacity, we are poised to unlock new economic opportunities and create sustainable livelihoods for the people of Ihavandhoo.”

Alongside the Fisheries Complex, the government is also spearheading a housing initiative in Ihavandhoo, with plans to construct 200 new residential units. This holistic approach to development aims to improve the living standards of the island’s residents, ensuring that economic growth is accompanied by enhanced quality of life.
Furthermore, the President participated in the foundation-laying ceremonies for a new Police Station and the new Council Secretariat building, underscoring the administration’s broader infrastructure development efforts in the region.
