Strict Enforcement of Propeller Guards in Excursion Boats to Safeguard Whale Sharks and Tourists
In a significant move towards marine conservation, the Government of Maldives has reinforced the use of propeller guards on excursion boats to protect the country’s iconic whale sharks (Fehurihi). This bold step underscores the Maldives’ commitment to sustainable tourism and the preservation of its delicate ecosystems.
Addressing the issue, the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim, stated, “Sometimes, over 100 tourists swim after a single whale shark; with no set policy. Even speedboats venture into this area.” The new protocol, set to be implemented within the next three months, will see special speedboats actively monitoring vessels that take tourists to areas with whale shark activity.
The regulation requiring propeller guards will be expanded beyond the South-Ari Marine Park (SAMPA), a world-renowned area where whale sharks can be observed throughout the year. “By mandating propeller guards, we are taking a significant step towards ensuring the safety of both whale sharks and those who admire them,” said Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO & MD of Visit Maldives. “This measure reflects our commitment to sustainable tourism and the preservation of our marine environment.”
Comprehensive Policies to Protect Whale Sharks
Last year, the Maldives government introduced a legal framework to safeguard whale sharks and their natural habitats. These policies include precautions for interacting with the creatures and guidelines for managing injured or unwell whale sharks. Within a 250-meter “contact zone” around a whale shark, only three vessels are allowed, and the speed must not exceed 5 knots per hour, or 2 knots when in the vicinity of the animal.
With these new regulations, the Maldives continues to lead in marine conservation efforts, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the beauty of these gentle giants. The measures not only enhance the experience for tourists interacting with whale sharks in the Maldives but also safeguard the vital ecosystem that supports these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
